Canadian Pavilion at the 15th Gwangju Biennale / 7 September to 1 December 2024 / Curators : William Huffman (West Baffin Cooperative) and Sun Lee (LEEKANGHA Art Museum)
The six Kinngait artists contributing to this pavilion are Saimaiyu Akesuk, Shuvinai Ashoona, Qavavau Manumie, Ningiukulu Teevee, Pitseolak Qimirpik and Ooloosie Saila; all have drawing as their primary medium. The Korean artists featured in Home and other places, all living and working in Gwangju, are Sae-woong Ju, Seol-a Kim and Joheum Lee, and unlike the Kinngait contingent, these creators are largely multidisciplinary in practice.
Each participating artist has contributed new work to this presentation, representing a number of perspectives on what constitutes an understanding of place and how we can individually and often collectively define the idea of home.
This first-ever creative collaboration is an important component of the Canada-Korea Year of Cultural Exchanges.
이번 전시관에 참여하는 6명의 킨가이트 작가들은 새마이유 아커석, 슈비나이 애슈나, 카버바우 매뉴미, 닝기우쿠루 티비, 핏설악 퀴미르픽, 울루시 사일러로 모두 드로잉 작업을 주 매체로 삼고 있습니다. <집 그리고 또 다른 장소들>에 참여한 한국 작가는 주세웅, 김설아, 이조흠으로 모두 광주에 거주하는 작가들이며, 킨가이트의 예술가들과는 달리 다양한 분야에서 여러가지 형태의 작업을 하는 창작자들입니다.
각 참여 작가들은 이번 전시회에 새로운 작품을 출품하여 장소에 대한 이해를 바탕으로 한 다양한 관점에서 집이라는 개념을 개인적으로, 때로는 공동체적으로 어떻게 정의할 수 있는지에 대한 다양한 관점을 제시합니다.
이 최초의 독창적인 협업은 한국-캐나다 상호문화교류의 해의 중요한 구성 요소라고 할 수 있습니다.
