진실을 응시했던 자유를 향한 시선

광주광역시 남구 이강하미술관은 2024년 신년 소장작품 전시 <이강하의 응시凝視 1984-2024>를 개최한다. 2018년부터 매년 故 이강하의 작품을 시대 별 주제와 흐름에 맞추어 소장 작품 전시로 선보이고 있다. 이강하미술관의 소장 작품은 1종 공립미술관의 존립과 정체성을 수립함과 동시에 지역문화유산 및 작품 관리 보존의 중요성을 담고 있다. 나아가 지속적인 지역 작가 연구를 통한 ‘과거-현재-미래의 시대와 세대’를 예술로 연결하고 사회적 공감대와 문화적 욕구를 충족시켜 주는 의미를 부여한다.
<이강하의 응시凝視, 1984-2024>展은 무등산의 화가로 알려진 故 이강하의 1980년대 <맥-아(脈-我)> 및 1995년 제1회 광주비엔날레 한국관 특별 전시에 처음 선보였던 <자유와 평화를 위하여>등 시대별 대표 작품으로 구성하였다. 작가는 한국의 전통성과 오방색을 바탕으로 남도의 사계절 풍경과 1980년 시대상을 담은 내러티브(Narrative)를 통해 독자적 회화성을 구축했다. 그는 1980년 오월, 민주화 운동 참여로 유죄 판결을 받고 지명 수배자로 은둔 생활을 했으며 1년여 수감되었다. 오랜 세월 이강하의 여섯 가지 죄 몫은 그를 자유롭지 못하게 했고, 사후 유가족의 숙원 끝에 2023년 12월 광주고등법원으로부터 43년여 만에 최종 무죄 판결을 받게 되어 이번 소장작품 전시는 더 큰 의미로 다가온다. 민주주의 역사 속 상처와 설움을 지녀 온 그의 진실을 향한 염원은 지금을 살아가는 후손들에게 까지 도달하였다.

The Gaze of Freedom that Stared at the Truth

The LeeKangHa Art Museum in Nam-gu, Gwangju, is hosting the 2024 New Year exhibition . Since 2018, the museum has been presenting the works of the late artist Lee Kang-ha every year as a collection exhibition in accordance with the themes and trends of the times. The collection of LeeKangHa Art Museum establishes the existence and identity of a first-grade public art museum. It also emphasizes the importance of managing and preserving regional cultural heritage and artworks. Further, it connects 'past-present-future' epochs and generations through continuous research on local artists, fulfilling social empathy and cultural desires.
This exhibition, features representative works from different eras, including Lee Kang-ha’s 1980s series and first presented at the special exhibition in the Korean Pavilion of the 1st Gwangju Biennale in 1995. The artist, known as the painter of Mt. Mudeung, established a unique painterly identity through narratives encapsulating Korea's tradition, five directional colors, seasonal landscapes of Jeollanamdo, and the phases of time of 1980s. In May 1980, he was convicted and went into hiding as a wanted man for his participation in the Democratization movement, resulting in around a year of imprisonment. For many years, Lee Kang-ha’s six charges kept him from freedom, and in December 2023, after a long struggle by his bereaved family, he was finally acquitted by the Gwangju High Court after more than 43 years, making the exhibition of the collection even more meaningful. His longing for truth, borne of the scars and sorrows in the history of democracy, now reaches the descendants living in the present.
