◼ 전시서문
2003년 겨울,
명동성당 들머리.
그곳은 해방구였습니다.
   
미등록-이주-노동자들은
주먹을 쥐었고,
춤을 추었고,
노래를 불렀습니다.
   
인간은 '불법'이 될 수 없다고
또 춤을 추고,
또 노래를 불렀습니다.
그리고 또 주먹을 쥐었습니다.
   
20년이 지났습니다.
사람들은 이제
명동성당 들머리에
누가 있었는지 기억하지 못합니다.
   
그러나
스리랑카에서 온 다라카가
성남 단대오거리역에서 달려온 열차에 몸을 던졌고
방글라데시에서 온 비꾸는 김포 원산리 공장서 목을 매달았고
러시아에서 온 안드레이는
본국으로 강제송환당하던 배에서 시린 바다로 몸을 던졌고,
부르혼, 자카리아...그리하여 그해 겨울
적어도 17명의
미등록-이주-노동자가
청춘을 바쳐 일했던 한국 정부의
고용허가제에 밀려,
강제추방의 공포에 삶을 마감했다는 사실은
미등록-이주-노동자의 몸에
뼈아리게 새겨졌습니다.
   
2003년 겨울 명동성당 들머리,
그리고 봄, 여름, 가을, 다시 겨울
380일,
미등록-이주-노동자 농성투쟁.
주먹을 치켜올린 매 순간은
내가 인간이라는, 노동자라는
자각의 순간이었습니다.
미등록-이주-노동자의
존재선언이었습니다.
   
이제 우리는 다시 20년 전의
미등록-이주-노동자들을 불러내고자 합니다.
명동성당 들머리에서 꾸었던
꿈을 묻습니다.
   
그때 미등록-이주-노동자들이
열고자했던 담대한 미래는 무엇이었을까요.
그리고 2023년 지금,
무엇이 바뀌었나요.

◼ Struggle for Dignity
Documentation of the undocumented migrant workers' sit-in at Myeongdong Cathedral 2003-2004

The winter of 2003.
The front yard of Myeongdong Cathedral was a "Liberation Zone" for undocumented-migrant-workers, where they raised clenched fists, danced and sang songs that no human being could be "illegal".

They danced, sang songs and raised their fists again and again.

Twenty years have passed. People have forgotten who stood at the edge of the cathedral.

But it is inscribed on the bodies of the undocumented migrant workers: Dharaka from Sri Lanka, who threw himself onto a moving train at Dandaeogeori station in Seongnam; Bikhu from Bangladesh, who hanged himself at the Gimpo Wonsan-ri factory; and Andrei from Russia, who threw himself into the cold sea from a ship on his way home after being deported, Burkhorn, Zakaria. ... and in the winter of 2003, at least 17 undocumented migrant workers ended their lives in fear of deportation, driven by the South Korean government's greed for the Employment Permit System.

In the winter of 2003, in the forecourt of Myeongdong Cathedral, and then spring, summer, autumn, winter again, 380 days of the sit-in by undocumented migrant workers had passed.
Every time they raised their fists, it was a time of consciousness as human beings and workers.
It was a Struggle for Dignity of the undocumented migrant workers.

And now we're going back to that moment 20 years ago.
We're going to meet the undocumented migrant workers and ask them what they were dreaming of at the edge of Myeongdong Cathedral.

What was the bold future that the undocumented migrant workers wanted to open up?
And now, in 2023, what has changed?
