통영은 전통과 현대, 자연과 문명이 공존하는 도시이다. 육지와 섬이 만나는 아름다운 자연풍광, 신아 폐조선소·근대역사문화거리 등 근대산업문화의 흔적, 통영12공방·옻칠·남해안별신굿·통영오광대 등 오랜 역사를 자랑하는 전통문화, 박경리·윤이상·전혁림 등 문학, 음악, 미술 등 다양한 장르의 예술가들이 탄생한 예술의 도시이다.

전통과 현대, 미래는 어떻게 이어갈 것인가. 자연과 사람이 어떻게 더불어 살 것인가. 낡은 도시에 어떻게 새로운 생명을 불어넣을 것인가.

서로 다른 문화와 예술, 자연과 사람이 균형을 이루며 공존하고 있는 통영의 특징을 한마디로 말하면 ‘조화(Balance)’이다. 통영이 세계와 함께 나누고 싶은 통영만의 철학, 통영이 품은 예술적 가치는 이러한 조화의 정신이다.

통영의 나전칠기에는 이와 같은 정신이 담겨있다. 나전칠기 하나에 예술과 기술, 자연과 사람이 만난다. 바다에서 나온 조개와 전복, 즉 자개의 조각들이 모이면 나무가구를 만드는 소목, 가구장식과 이음새를 만드는 금속조각 두석, 광택과 아름다움을 더하는 옻칠 등 여러 장인이 함께 협업한다. 자연과 인간의 손길이 한데 어우러져 작품이 탄생하는 것이다. ‘조화’는 균형이고 관계의 회복이다. 궁극적으로 갈등을 해소하는 평화이자, 모든 구성원이 하나로 어우러지는 축제이다.

전통공예, 문학, 미술, 음악, 공연 등 다양한 분야의 장인들이 이곳에 모여 서로 교류하며 새로움을 창조해왔다. 모든 예술의 창조는 무에서 유를 만드는 것이 아니라 기존의 것에 정신과 철학, 기술을 더해 가치와 역사를 부여하는 일이다. 버려지고 낡은 도심의 공간에 예술의 숨결이 더해지면 새로운 의미가 만들어진다. 역사와 경험의 흔적이 남은 거리 위로 지금의 기술과 예술, 현대를 살아가는 사람들의 이야기를 덧칠한다.

통영 : 섬·바람

THE SEA, THE SEEDS

통영의 바람은 소통과 생명의 상징이다. 바람은 공간(섬)과 인간(예술가/시민), 시간(전통/미래) 사이를 순환하며 모든 벽과 경계를 허물고 새로운 생명을 준다. 2022 통영국제트리엔날레를 통해 예술의 ‘섬’ 통영에 새로운 ‘바람’을 불어넣는다. 신선한 예술이 섬을 깨우고, 역사와 만나 다시 생명을 얻는다. 전통과 미래, 예술과 시민, 통영과 세계를 잇는 이 창조적인 순환이 통영을 세계적인 예술의 섬으로 만들어 예술 플랫폼으로 자리잡는 통영으로 재창조된다. 통영시, 그 자체가 하나의 문화예술관이며 각기 다른 예술과 문화가 모인 ‘섬’이다. 다양한 장르를 가진 섬들로 통영은 섬의 바다가 된다. 각각의 섬에 부는 바람의 의미를 상징화해 공간에 담았다. 시민들의 공간에서부는 바람은 ‘사람의 숨결’로 오래된 산업현장인 구.신아sb조선소에 닿은 바람은 자연을 의미하는 ‘바다’와시작을 알리는 ‘씨앗’으로 전달된다.

In the Spring of 2022, a new international artistic and cultural event, “The Tongyeong Triennale”, will be launched. The theme of this first edition is entitled “THE SEA, THE SEEDS”.

Life appeared on Earth approximately 4 billion years ago, through a combination of meteorite, crashed comet dust and the ocean water. It took 400 million years for these cosmic seeds to create and shape multiple forms of life through a simple yet complex evolutive process. This emergence led us to what we are today, human sentient beings descending from the cosmos and arising from the sea.

This premier edition of the Tongyeong Triennale, “THE SEA, THE SEEDS” is, firstly, a celebration of the Sea. Today our survival depends on the ocean life. The sea is the source of the vital elements that feed and rhythm the existence, the energy, and the soul of Tongyeong’s way of life. Therefore, this Triennale’s birthname is given symbolically as an offering to the sea, to receive, in return, its blessings and natures greatest omens.

The Seeds are the second element of this Triennale.They are the original phase, the primal step, the initial act. Our intention is to sow artistic seeds in Tongyeong’s everyday life, in the mind of its citizens and visitors. Seeds of inspiration, revelation, and elevation through the immeasurable power of art. Seeds with the promise of cultural blooming and emergence for future editions.

The local art scene, the Korean art scene, and the international art scene will be represented in transdisciplinary and eclectic events, consequential to all generations. This cultural crossover will offer us a broader perception and vision of our world, and of ourselves, through multiple artistic practices, all using and applying ancient techniques and new technologies.

This event is comprised of numerous practices ranging from craft, fine arts and contemporary art & design to art & tech, VR, AI, and neuro design. All portrayed through different mediums, varying from immersive installations, cinema, video, and photo, to radio, music, and dance performances along with pop culture, street art, land art.

The main art exhibition TAKE YOUR TIME! with the artworks of 35 artists, will take place in SB office building. TAKE YOUR TIME! is about the observation and the perception of the permanence and the impermanence of the present. An interrogation on the value of time in our contemporary life, while simultaneously facing today’s exponential environmental crisis, which constitutes the circumstances and context of our existence.

The Grand Theater of the Citizen Cultural Center will be the stage for all the major events; live performances, screenings, forum and talks. Among these events, we will propose original formats like a “All-Nighter”, for the Spring, with breakfast for all audience members in the morning. A network of private and public spaces affiliated with the Triennale will hold small scale events.

The very first event of the Triennale will be dedicated to craft. Answering the wish of the craftsmen of Tongyeong, to have their work exposed in an exhibition in Seoul, the Korea Craft and Design Foundation, belonging to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, will host a Tongyeong Craft exhibition in Seoul, which will take place in February 2022, prior to the opening of the triennale in March.

The global intention of the curatorial team is to make Tongyeong a new garden of thoughts and forms, and a source of inspiration and extended potentiality for all of us.
